We invest directly into New Zealand businesses, with a preference for those of significance to Te Waipounamu. We like to partner with other owners and invest in businesses that share our values and growth aspirations. Through investing directly in businesses, we seek an active role where we can make governance appointments and contribute to business performance.
Fidelity Life is the largest locally owned and operated life insurer in Aotearoa. Ngāi Tahu Investments has invested $140 million to support its acquisition of Westpac Life NZ, resulting in a 24.9 percent stake in the combined business. The investment was completed in early 2022.
Hilton Haulage is a leading transport and storage supplier to Canterbury businesses. In 2016, alongside the founding shareholders, we invested funding into Hilton Haulage to support their growth aspirations. Through this investment, Ngāi Tahu Investments owns a 50% stake of Hilton Haulage.
Sanford (SAN) was incorporated in 1904 and listed on the NZX in 1924. SAN is New Zealand’s largest aquaculture company, second largest quota owner (c.20% of total quota) and one of the largest fishing companies. It has six processing facilities across New Zealand, employing c.1,400 staff. Products are sold both domestically and internationally to retailers and food service customers, including Europe, North America, Australia, China and Japan.
NTI holds a 19.9% share.
Ngāi Tahu Investments holds diversified share portfolios of domestic and international listed companies. Ngāi Tahu Investments manages its own environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index through a screening process that is focused on ethical practices, climate change, and sustainability factors that align with Ngāi Tahu values. These listed investments enable a direct, low-cost and diversified exposure, and provide Ngāi Tahu Holdings with a source of liquidity that is readily accessible.
Private Equity Funds
We invest in New Zealand and Australian private equity fund managers who invest in private businesses. These fund managers use our (and other investors) commitments to help New Zealand businesses to develop and grow, and ultimately achieve a return on our investment. Working through private equity managers means we can make the most of their investment expertise, and keeps informed about new sectors, thematics and potential opportunities.
Rockit Global is a Hawke’s Bay based miniature apple producer. Ngāi Tahu Investments acquired a 6% stake in the company’s capital raise in 2021 to support its significant growth aspirations.
Waikato Milking Systems
Waikato Milking Systems is a designer, manufacturer, and supplier of dairy technology to the New Zealand market and more than 20 dairy-producing countries. In 2014 Ngāi Tahu Investments partnered with Tainui Group Holdings and Pioneer Capital to purchase Waikato Milking Systems. Each partner owns about 33% of the business.
New Economy Mandate
Ngāi Tahu Investments has engaged GreenMount Capital to invest in a portfolio of companies consistent with ‘new economy’ thematics such as alternative proteins, digitisation, automation and AI, energy transition and circular economy.
GreenMount is a boutique financial advisor to investors and companies undertaking mergers and acquisitions. GreenMount’s founder is Ryan Davis, a Ngāi Tahu iwi member with deep financial advisory experience across Australasia and Asia.
Ngāi Tahu Investments acquired a 25% stake in GreenMount Advisory in 2020 to support its growth aspirations.
Ryman built its first retirement home in Christchurch in 1984. The company now owns 31 retirement villages, and serves over 10,000 residents in New Zealand and Australia. Ngāi Tahu Investments was a cornerstone investor in this business, which has grown to be one of New Zealand’s largest listed companies. Over time we have sold down our shares to help create a more diverse Ngāi Tahu Holdings investment portfolio. Currently, we have less than 1% shareholding.
Whale Watch Kaikōura
Ngāi Tahu Investments has been supporting the multi award-winning nature tourism company Whale Watch Kaikōura since it began in 1987. We hold a 43.5% shareholding in the locally-owned whale watching business, which hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year.
When considering new investments we take a long-term view. This is aligned to Ngāi Tahu Holdings’ goal of providing a steady distribution of funds to support Ngāi Tahu whānau in this generation and the next. We target private businesses that complement our existing investment portfolio, and share our values and growth aspirations.
